Locality

Agios Philippos Mine, Kirki Mines, AlexandroupoliEvrosEastern Macedonia and ThraceGreece

The most important locality of the Kirki mines which was occasionally mined during 1973-1998 (Skarpelis & Triantafyllidis, 2004).

It is a Pb-Zn-Bi-Sn-Ge-Ga-In vein- and breccia-type deposit (Voudouris et al., 2022) and is enriched in a large suite of incompatible elements, including Bi (>2000 ppm), Sn (>100 ppm), U (up to 200 ppm), Pb (>1 wt%), Zn (>1 wt%), Mo (up to 62 ppm), Ge (>100 ppm), Ga (up to 466 ppm) and In (up to 222 ppm).

There can be traced two groups of NNW veins in Eocene sandstones and pelites, with intrusions of dacite, rhyodacites and granodiorites.

The mineralization is characterized as Low-T / high-fS2 and is genetically related with the Pagoni Rachi prospect.

Today, the area poses a major environmental problem due to the acid leaching and abandoned chemicals. An acid lake in the pit contains high concentrations of heavy metals.
